FT255 - Cast Iron Daruma by Zuihō 瑞峰

FT255 - Cast Iron Daruma by Zuihō 瑞峰

This is a cast iron Daruma figurine titled 吉祥 開運達磨 (Kisshō Kaiun Daruma), created by the artist 瑞峰 (Zuihō) — a striking piece imbued with the spirit of good fortune and perseverance. Unlike the traditional rounded form, this Daruma features a bold, faceted body, giving it a contemporary geometric edge while retaining the iconic features of the Zen patriarch Bodhidharma, including a stern expression and wide, penetrating eyes.

Painted in a vivid red lacquer with a contrasting gold-painted face, this Daruma embodies the traditional Japanese symbolism of red for protection and warding off evil, and gold for prosperity and success. The character of the face is skillfully hand-finished with intense brushwork, emphasizing the fierce determination associated with Daruma figures — an embodiment of the phrase 「七転び八起き」(nanakorobi yaoki, “fall seven times, rise eight”).

吉祥開運, meaning “auspicious good fortune,” this Daruma is not only a spiritual talisman but also a powerful visual charm said to attract luck, success, and the fulfillment of wishes. Its solid cast iron weight gives it presence and permanence — a piece to be both admired and relied upon in times of goal-setting or transition.

Crafted by Zuihō, an artisan known for expressive interpretations of traditional figures, this Daruma makes a meaningful addition to any Japanese folk art collection, or a purposeful gift for someone pursuing new beginnings or enduring challenges with strength and grace.
