FT253 - Fushimi Dolls Kōgō from Kyoto︱Ningyō 伏見人形
This hand-crafted horse figurine is a fine example of a Fushimi Ningyō (伏見人形)—a traditional Kyoto clay doll with a history tracing back to the Edo period. Made by Ōnishi Jūtarō Shōten (大西重太郎商店), a renowned sixth-generation family workshop in Kyoto’s historic Fushimi Ward, the piece embodies centuries of Japanese folk artistry and craftsmanship.
Each Fushimi doll is molded from local clay and individually painted with vivid pigments, often featuring symbolic motifs that invoke good fortune, protection, and prosperity. This particular figure 香盒 (kōgō), an incense container shaped like a horse, reflects both the playfulness and spirituality characteristic of Kyoto’s folk traditions.
Located near the iconic Fushimi Inari Taisha Shrine, Ōnishi Jūtarō Shōten continues to preserve the cultural heritage of these dolls, blending artistry, faith, and regional identity into every piece. The included wooden box and paper leaflet (with the shop’s name and history) underscore its authenticity and cultural significance.
