FT250 - Shōfuku Eto Snake Figurine – Mino Ware 美濃焼
This striking ceramic sculpture represents the Year of the Snake (巳 / Mi), crafted in the distinct style of Mino ware (美濃焼) by Kōyō Tōen (晃養陶苑), a respected pottery studio known for blending tradition with refined modern aesthetics.
Formed in a stylized, minimalist shape, the snake is rendered with smooth, flowing lines and covered in a pale celadon glaze featuring a stunning crackle pattern (貫入 / kannyū), a hallmark of high-quality ceramics. The elegant curves of the body spiral upward in a quiet, coiled posture that evokes stillness, balance, and hidden strength.
The accompanying wooden tomobako (共箱) bears bold calligraphy, including the character for the zodiac sign 巳 (Snake), and the seal of the maker, affirming its authenticity and artistic value.
In Japanese culture, the snake symbolizes wisdom, protection, and renewal, and this piece is part of the Shōfuku Eto (招福干支) tradition—auspicious zodiac figurines displayed to invite happiness and good fortune.
