Shōfuku Eto “Tenjin-ushi” (天神牛) by Heian Manjudō (平安萬珠堂造) – Zodiac Ox Figurine with Box
This black ceramic ox figurine, titled “Tenjin-ushi” (天神牛), is a dignified representation of the ox from the Japanese zodiac (Eto). Crafted by the renowned Kyoto workshop Heian Manjudō (平安萬珠堂), this piece belongs to the Shōfuku Eto (招福干支) series—auspicious zodiac figures traditionally displayed for good fortune and seasonal celebration.
The ox (ushi, 牛) is a symbol of perseverance, diligence, and prosperity, and this reclining figure evokes a calm, grounded energy. Sculpted with smooth, flowing lines and finished in a deep matte black glaze, it expresses quiet strength and refined Japanese aesthetic sensibilities.
"Tenjin-ushi" refers to the sacred ox associated with Sugawara no Michizane, the deified god of learning (Tenjin-sama), who is often depicted with an ox. In Japanese culture, the figure of the ox is believed to carry protective qualities, especially in the realms of scholarship, patience, and enduring success.
This piece comes with its original wooden tomobako (共箱), bearing hand-brushed calligraphy and the maker’s red seal, adding to its value as a collectible or gift.
