FT247 - Japan White Marble Craft from Akiyoshidō 秋芳洞

FT247 - Japan White Marble Craft from Akiyoshidō 秋芳洞

This omiyage craft from Akiyoshidō (秋芳洞), located in Yamaguchi Prefecture’s scenic Akiyoshidai Plateau, features a finely carved wild boar (inoshishi) made from dairiseki (大理石) — Japanese white marble. The minimalist form captures the boar mid-stride, stylized with smooth contours and subtle etching along the back to suggest movement and strength. Hand-polished to a soft sheen, the white marble gives the figure a sense of purity and weight, while simple painted accents bring life to the eyes and snout.

Wild boars hold deep cultural significance in Japan. As one of the animals of the Japanese zodiac, the boar (亥) symbolizes courage, determination, and protection from misfortune. Especially in rural and mountainous regions like Akiyoshidai, the boar is a familiar creature — respected for its fierce and untamed spirit.

This marble craft represents not only local artistry but also the geological pride of the region. Akiyoshidō is famous for being the largest limestone cave in Japan, and the surrounding area is rich in karst formations, including marble deposits. This piece is a charming souvenir that captures both the natural beauty and the folk spirit of western Japan, blending stonecraft tradition with symbolic meaning.
