This is a traditional Fushimi Ningyō (伏見人形) from Kyoto, depicting a coiled white snake encircling a golden orb. Crafted from clay and finished with a matte white glaze, the figurine captures the texture of the serpent’s scales with fine detail. The gold sphere it protects is a symbolic reference to wealth and spiritual power, often associated with snakes in Japanese folklore.

In Japan, the white snake (白蛇, shirohebi) is a revered creature believed to be a divine messenger of Benzaiten (弁財天), the goddess of fortune, music, and knowledge. It is also widely regarded as a symbol of prosperity, fertility, and protection, making this figure a potent talisman for attracting good fortune and warding off misfortune. The curled posture conveys calm strength and guardianship, while the golden orb adds a touch of auspicious brilliance.

This Fushimi Ningyō came from the 6th generation of the shop 大西重太郎商店 (Ōnishi Jūtarō Shōten) located in Fushimi Ward, Kyoto, near Fushimi Inari Shrine. Fushimi dolls dating back to the 16th century. They were traditionally sold as omamori (protective charms) to shrine visitors, and their simple yet expressive designs continue to charm collectors and spiritual seekers alike.
