FT241 - Vintage Folk crafts Gosho-guruma 御所車

This vintage miniature craft is a traditional 御所車 (Gosho-guruma), or Heian-style ox-drawn carriage, once used by Japanese aristocracy during the Heian period (794–1185). Carefully handcrafted and adorned with intricate patterns, this decorative piece is richly detailed with a colorful textile-covered roof, gold-accented wooden wheels, and lacquer-style poles, all resting on a vivid red fabric base that enhances its ceremonial feel.

The Gosho-guruma appears frequently in traditional arts and crafts, as well as in kimono patterns and seasonal displays. It is especially common in Hina Matsuri (Girls’ Day) doll arrangements, where it symbolizes the ideal of a refined life and carries wishes for a girl to grow up surrounded by beauty, fortune, and protection. Whether depicted in miniature form or stylized as a decorative motif, the Gosho-guruma continues to embody the essence of Japanese elegance and cultural sophistication.
