FT236 - Japanese New Year’s stamp 年賀状スタンプ
A vintage Japanese New Year’s stamp (年賀状スタンプ) featuring a snake design, created for use during the Year of the Snake. The stamp’s surface is intricately carved from red rubber, depicting a stylized snake intertwined with flowers and bamboo leaves—symbols that represent good fortune, longevity, and renewal in Japanese culture. Along the side of the design, the traditional New Year’s greeting “謹賀新年” (“Kinga Shinnen,” meaning Happy New Year) is inscribed in elegant characters.
The handle of the stamp is made from a smooth, cream-colored resin or plastic material with a rounded shape that fits comfortably in the hand. A small metallic emblem on the side adds a touch of authenticity, hinting at its mid-century manufacturing origin. The stamp comes in its original box, which features a red and brown checkerboard pattern and a printed version of the same snake motif that appears on the stamp face. The box design reflects the festive aesthetic of traditional Japanese New Year celebrations.
This stamp was used for decorating nengajō (年賀状), or Japanese New Year’s greeting cards, a beloved custom in which people send cards to family, friends, and colleagues to mark the beginning of the year. With its nostalgic design and detailed craftsmanship, this piece beautifully captures the charm of Showa-era Japanese stationery and holiday traditions.
