This striking hand-carved wooden figure depicts the infamous Kurozuka (黒塚), the demonic oni-baba (鬼婆, "demon hag") of Japanese folklore. Crafted by master folk artist Saitō Shōtarō (斉藤正太郎), a notable figure in the tradition of Kurosaki ningyō (黒崎人形) — regional wooden dolls from Aizu, Fukushima Prefecture, this piece is a rare and expressive example of yokai-themed woodcraft.

The figure represents the terrifying legend of Kurozuka, the old mountain crone of Adachigahara — a tale that has been told since the Heian period. Often portrayed with wild eyes, white hair, and a crimson mouth, this mythical hag is said to have preyed on travelers, only to be revealed as a fearsome demon when confronted by monks. Her story is one of Japan’s most enduring supernatural legends and has been retold in Noh, kabuki, and countless folktales.

Saitō’s carving captures this eerie yet culturally iconic figure with sharp geometric lines and bold, painted accents: The white triangular hair and expressive red-lined face highlight the hag’s supernatural presence.

The vivid eyes and heavy features reflect her yokai origins. The calligraphy on the front includes her name “黒塚” and the artist’s signature, giving it an authentic collectible value.

This is a unique and expressive work of Japanese mingei (folk art) perfect for collectors of yokai, traditional dolls, or regional crafts. It embodies not only the haunting beauty of Japanese legend but also the careful artistry of one of Aizu’s master woodcarvers.
