FT168 - Pair of vintage Anesama Ningyō Dolls 姉様人形
A vintage pair of Anesama Ningyō (姉様人形) captures the timeless elegance of traditional Japanese beauty and sisterhood. These handcrafted dolls are made from washi paper and textiles, dressed in richly patterned kimono fabrics. Each figure is gracefully elongated, with delicate features, simple round faces, and meticulously styled hair made from fine yarn.
The left doll wears a bold kimono with red and yellow floral motifs against a lattice design, evoking a cheerful, youthful charm. Her black hair flows freely with a soft pink ribbon.
The right doll exudes refined grace in a red and floral kimono with an orange obi and a neatly arranged white updo hairstyle, complete with a decorative knot. Her poised stance and layered garments reflect a more mature, dignified presence.
Anesama Ningyō originated as Edo-period paper dolls, traditionally made by girls as playthings or gifts. The name “anesama” (literally “older sister”) reflects admiration for graceful, kimono-clad women, often modeled after older siblings or role models.
