A vintage papier-mâché rooster (hariko) folk toy from Japan, crafted in the spirit of good luck and protection. This rounded, hand-painted figure features a lively rooster perched upright, painted in vivid hues of red, white, and black, with a delicate gold accent representing auspiciousness.
It holds a miniature arrow, or hamaya (破魔矢), which is traditionally believed to ward off evil spirits and bring good luck. The body is decorated with a delicate plum blossom motif, further invoking renewal, resilience, and beauty in hardship, classic seasonal symbolism in Japanese art. A small wooden plaque reads 「開運来福」 (kaiun raifuku), meaning “Good Fortune and Happiness Come,” traditionally displayed during New Year festivities.
