RARE! Vintage Fushimi Ningyō (伏見人形) in perfect condition with the orignal box — a traditional handcrafted clay doll from the Fushimi Inari area of Kyoto, Japan.
Fushimi dolls are considered the oldest type of clay dolls in Japan, dating back to the 16th century, during farming off-seasons, common folk would take the opportunity to visit famous temples across Japan to pray and give thanks for bountiful harvests. This practice marked the beginning of travel culture in Japan and also led to the origin of local folk toys (known as kyōdo ningyō).During the Genna era (1615–1624) in the early Edo period, Fushimi merchants were already making and selling dolls.
This Fushimi Ningyō came from the 6th generation of the shop 大西重太郎商店 (Ōnishi Jūtarō Shōten) located in Fushimi Ward, Kyoto, near Fushimi Inari Shrine. This particular Fushimi doll depicts a child holding a split manju (sweet bun). While it seems like the child is about to eat, the doll symbolizes wisdom—based on a story where the child cleverly avoids choosing between parents by saying both halves taste the same. Popular since the Edo period, it was believed to bring intelligence and used in fertility rituals. Today, it's cherished as a cultural icon and symbol of cleverness and charm.
This often symbolizes purity, protection, and good fortune. Children are associated with innocence and divine blessings in Japanese culture. Fushimi Dolls in general are believed to ward off evil, bring blessings and good health.
