FA18 - Tea Ceremony Fukusa Cloth 帛紗

FA18 - Tea Ceremony Fukusa Cloth 帛紗

This vintage fukusa (帛紗) is a traditional silk cloth used in the Japanese tea ceremony (sadō / chanoyu). Presented in its original box, it embodies both the refined aesthetics and disciplined etiquette central to tea practice.

The cloth features a vibrant vermilion red color, a tone traditionally associated with auspiciousness, vitality, and protection. It is adorned with a delicate plum blossom motif (ume), a symbol of resilience and early spring, often appreciated in tea culture for its poetic seasonal reference. The understated design reflects the quiet beauty and mindfulness valued in the tea ceremony.

In practice, a fukusa is used by the host to ritually purify tea utensils such as the tea scoop (chashaku) and tea caddy (natsume). The precise folding and handling of the cloth are an essential part of the choreography of tea, expressing respect, harmony, and attention to detail.

The silk fabric has a smooth yet slightly textured feel, allowing it to hold crisp folds during use. Even outside of tea ceremony, it can be appreciated as a cultural textile or displayed as a subtle decorative piece.

Size: 25 x 25cm
