EM021 - Ema plaque from Atsuta Jingū 熱田神宮
This Ema (絵馬) plaque comes from Atsuta Jingū (熱田神宮), one of Shinto’s most venerable shrines and a major center of worship in Nagoya. The plaque features a dynamic depiction of a wild boar (猪・いのしし, inoshishi)—an animal long associated with courage, vitality, and protection.
Painted in bold, lively colors, the boar is shown charging forward with powerful momentum. Its bright orange body, spotted markings, and sharp tusks are outlined in thick black strokes, giving the image an energetic, folk-art character. Accents of white and blue add rhythm and movement, while the visible wood grain beneath the paint lends warmth and rustic authenticity to the piece.
A small metal bell (鈴, suzu) is attached to the cord—a traditional Shinto element believed to attract the attention of the kami and ward off negative influences. The bell’s gentle sound reinforces the ema’s role as both prayer offering and protective charm.
The wild boar is also one of the twelve zodiac animals, symbolizing determination, honesty, and the strength to overcome obstacles. At Atsuta Jingū—closely linked with protection, sincerity, and martial spirit—the inoshishi motif resonates especially strongly, embodying forward momentum and unwavering resolve.
Both devotional and decorative, this ema reflects the distinctive character of Atsuta Jingū: ancient, powerful, and deeply rooted in Shinto tradition. It would traditionally be hung at the shrine after a wish is written on the reverse, carrying prayers for strength, protection, and success to the kami.
