This Ema (絵馬) plaque is associated with Tōdai-ji (東大寺), specifically its sub-hall Nigatsu-dō (二月堂), a site deeply connected with devotional practice and repentance rituals in Nara.

On the front, the plaque bears bold calligraphy reading 「南無觀自在」 (Namu Kanjizai)—a devotional phrase meaning “Homage to Kannon”, referring to Avalokiteśvara, the Bodhisattva of Compassion. This phrase expresses reverence, reliance, and a heartfelt prayer for mercy, guidance, and relief from suffering. The characters are written in a strong, dignified hand, emphasizing solemn faith rather than ornamentation. The red vertical inscriptions 「東大寺」 and 「二月堂」 clearly identify the sacred provenance of the Ema.

The reverse side features a stylized image of a lantern, a powerful symbol at Nigatsu-dō. Lanterns evoke light in darkness, spiritual awakening, and the guiding compassion of Kannon. The design recalls the atmosphere of Nigatsu-dō’s famous rituals, especially the Omizutori ceremony, where fire and light play a central role in purification and renewal.

Crafted from plain, finely grained wood and finished with a red hanging cord, this Ema is austere yet deeply symbolic. It reflects the character of Nigatsu-dō itself—quiet, ancient, and contemplative. Visitors would traditionally write prayers on the reverse, often seeking compassion, protection, repentance, or inner clarity, before offering it at the hall.
