EM016 - Ema plaque from Matsuo Taisha 松尾大社

EM016 - Ema plaque from Matsuo Taisha 松尾大社

This charming ema (絵馬) votive plaque comes from Matsuo Taisha (松尾大社), a revered Shinto shrine in Kyoto known for its deep connection to sake brewing and agricultural blessings.

The plaque features a design by the artist 雅未 (Masami). At the center is a white rat, the zodiac animal of the Year of the Rat (2020 / Reiwa 2), holding a gourd — a classic symbol of prosperity and good fortune. The rat is depicted with soft gray spots and a cheerful expression, evoking both playfulness and luck. Surrounding the rat are auspicious motifs, including pine and plum blossoms (symbols of longevity and resilience).

The red kanji on the right side reads 開運 (kaiun), meaning "good luck" or "fortune opening," while the kanji on the left includes the date “Reiwa 2nd Year Spring” (令和二年春子), placing this ema in the early months of 2020.

At the lower left, the red seal mark of Matsuo Taisha confirms its origin. This ema makes a lovely collectible piece or a meaningful charm for inviting happiness, success, and a prosperous path forward.
