EM010 - Japanese Ema Hōzenji Temple 法善寺 絵馬

EM010 - Japanese Ema Hōzenji Temple 法善寺 絵馬

This Japanese ema (絵馬) originates from Mizukake Fudōson at Hōzenji Temple (水掛不動尊 法善寺), a famous Buddhist temple located in the bustling Dōtonbori district of Osaka. The temple is dedicated to Fudō Myōō (不動明王), the “Immovable Wisdom King,” known for granting protection and strength.

The ema features a beautiful illustration of the temple’s main hall, depicted in a traditional ukiyo-e style. The structure is shown with a curved blue-tiled roof and vibrant red curtains (noren), set along a cobblestone path leading into the sacred precinct. A faint green willow tree adds a touch of serenity — a nod to the temple’s peaceful urban oasis atmosphere.

On the left side, Japanese calligraphy reads “水掛不動尊” (Mizukake Fudōson) and “法善寺” (Hōzenji), identifying the temple. Traditional red seal stamps (hanko) and inscriptions provide an authentic touch of reverence and artistry. The top is fitted with a red cord, used to hang the plaque at the shrine after writing one’s prayer or wish on the back.

Size: 12.5 x 8.5 x 0.5cm
