EM009 - Ema Plaque from Kumano Hayatama Taisha 熊野速玉大社

EM009 - Ema Plaque from Kumano Hayatama Taisha 熊野速玉大社

This uniquely shaped Ema (絵馬) plaque comes from Kumano Hayatama Taisha (熊野速玉大社), one of the three Grand Shrines of the Kumano Sanzan in Wakayama Prefecture. Crafted in the form of a vermilion torii gate, this plaque features a striking depiction of Yatagarasu (八咫烏)  the mythical three-legged crow, holding a sacred sprig in its beak.

In Japanese mythology, Yatagarasu is a divine messenger and a symbol of guidance, divine will, and victory, famously said to have guided Emperor Jimmu during his eastern expedition. The presence of this revered creature, set against a backdrop of the shrine’s architectural elements, evokes spiritual protection and direction on one’s journey.

A small bell charm is attached to the red cord, believed to help ward off evil and bring good fortune.

Perfect for collectors of Japanese folk items, Shinto artifacts, or those drawn to the mystique of the Kumano Kodo pilgrimage routes, this ema is a beautiful token of spiritual significance and tradition.

Size: 15 x 10 x 0.5cm
