This striking wooden ema (votive plaque) comes from Mishima Taisha (三嶋大社) 1998, a historic Shinto shrine located in Shizuoka Prefecture. It features a majestic hand-painted tiger, symbolizing courage, strength, and protection. The background includes elegant bamboo stalks, a red sun, and the auspicious characters 大吉 (Daikichi), meaning “great fortune”.

The other side of the plaque is stamped with the shrine’s name: 三嶋大社 (Mishima Taisha), known as the Ichinomiya (highest-ranked shrine) of the old Izu Province. The shrine has long been a center of devotion for those praying for safe travels, prosperity, and victory in battle.

It is referenced in classical literature and visited by many historic figures, such as Minamoto no Yoritomo, the founder of the Kamakura shogunate. He famously prayed here for victory during his exile.

The thick rectangular shape and rustic hemp rope give it a distinctive charm and weight. This one makes a wonderful decorative item or a symbolic gift for those born in the Year of the Tiger or seeking strength and protection.

Size: 10 x 7 x 5cm
