EM006 - Ema from Yoshimizu Shrine 吉水神社
This wooden ema (絵馬) plaque is from Yoshimizu Shrine in Nara Prefecture, Japan, a sacred site historically associated with the imperial court and samurai. The front features a charming and colorful illustration titled “豊太閤 花見の史蹟”, depicting Toyotomi Hideyoshi (豊太閤) the powerful 16th-century warlord—enjoying hanami (cherry blossom viewing) with his court during a grand spring celebration. Behind the figures, delicate cherry blossoms are in full bloom, capturing the serene beauty of Yoshinoyama (Mount Yoshino), one of Japan’s most iconic sakura spots.
The back of the ema carries a beautifully written waka poem (和歌), reflecting the fleeting nature of cherry blossoms and time, a motif often linked to samurai ideals and Buddhist thought.
This ema is not only a beautiful piece of folk art but also a small portal into a celebrated moment of Japanese history, a wonderful collectible or decorative item for those who appreciate Japanese tradition, poetry, and aesthetics.
