A dragon dorei clay bell from the tradition of Nogomi Ningyō (のごみ人形), a distinctive Japanese folk craft admired for its expressive hand-shaped forms and warm, playful character.
This piece depicts a stylized dragon (辰 / tatsu) with a richly painted golden-brown body, accented with yellow horns, bright eyes, small white fangs, and freely brushed decorative lines. Its compact, rounded shape and slightly humorous expression give it a wonderful folk-art personality, while the natural fibre cord at the back completes its rustic handmade appearance.
The dragon is one of the twelve animals of the Japanese zodiac and is traditionally associated with strength, vitality, good fortune, ambition, and success. As the only mythical creature in the zodiac, it has long been regarded as especially powerful and auspicious.
Nogomi dolls were historically created during periods of hardship, particularly around the late wartime and postwar years, when everyday life in Japan was marked by uncertainty and scarcity.
