CB307 - Dorei Clay Bell from Kamakura 鎌倉
A charming vintage dorei (土鈴) clay bell from Kamakura (鎌倉), decorated with a delicate narcissus motif (水仙 / suisen).
The clean design and fresh seasonal motif give it a quiet elegance, while the orange braided cord at the top adds a warm touch of colour. The underside opening reveals its traditional bell construction, allowing it to produce the gentle sound characteristic of Japanese dorei.
Kamakura, located in Kanagawa Prefecture south of Tokyo, is one of Japan’s most historically important temple towns. It served as the political centre of Japan during the Kamakura period (1185–1333) and became closely associated with the rise of the samurai class and the development of Zen Buddhism. Today, the city is celebrated for its numerous Buddhist temples, Shinto shrines, historic streets, and enduring craft traditions. Small folk objects and temple souvenirs such as dorei have long been part of the cultural experience of visiting Kamakura.
In Japan, dorei are small earthenware bells traditionally associated with good fortune, protection, pilgrimage, and regional folk culture. Many were created as keepsakes from temples, shrines, and famous travel destinations, making them both decorative objects and reminders of a particular place.
The narcissus is especially admired as a winter flower in Japan. Blooming during the colder months, it is often associated with purity, resilience, quiet beauty, and the coming of spring.
