This distinctive vintage dorei (土鈴) clay bell comes from Sengaku-ji Temple (泉岳寺) in Tokyo. Formed in a simple rounded shape and finished in white, the bell is decorated with bold temple-related markings in red and black and completed with a thick, hand-braided straw rope and tassels, giving it a particularly rustic and ceremonial appearance.
The inscription Sengaku-ji 泉岳寺 is prominently displayed on the front. Sengaku-ji is one of Tokyo’s best-known historic Buddhist temples and is closely associated with the celebrated story of the Forty-Seven Rōnin (四十七士 / Akō Rōshi). The graves of the forty-seven retainers and their lord, Asano Naganori, are located within the temple grounds, and the site remains a place of remembrance for their story of loyalty, duty, and sacrifice.
The red emblem on the left resembles the crossed hawk-feather crest (違い鷹の羽) traditionally associated with the Asano clan, further connecting the piece with the history commemorated at Sengaku-ji.
Dorei are traditional Japanese earthenware bells often sold or presented at temples and shrines as souvenirs, protective charms, or commemorative objects. Their gentle sound and handmade character make them particularly appealing examples of regional Japanese folk craft.
