CB239 - Dorei Clay Bell of Nogomi Ningyō のごみ人形

CB239 - Dorei Clay Bell of Nogomi Ningyō のごみ人形

This handmade and hand-painted dorei clay bell is a delightful example of のごみ人形 (Nogomi Ningyō), a style of Japanese folk toy known for its warm, unrefined charm and expressive simplicity. Crafted from clay and suspended by a natural straw cord, the piece embodies the essence of traditional rural craftsmanship, where each object is shaped and decorated by hand, resulting in subtle variations that make every example unique.

The figure takes the form of wild boar (inoshishi) with a rounded, compact body and an exaggerated, forward-thrust snout. Its vivid red coloring is striking, accented by bold, minimal brushwork: white tusks, wide eyes with contrasting pupils, and simple linear markings that suggest fur and movement. A green patch on the back adds a playful, almost symbolic touch, enhancing its folk-art character.

As a dorei, the hollow interior contains a small pellet that produces a soft, earthy chime when shaken. This gentle sound has long been believed to purify spaces, ward off misfortune, and invite good fortune, making such bells both decorative and protective objects in everyday life.

Nogomi Ningyō are especially valued for their naïve, almost childlike aesthetic, where proportion and precision give way to personality and spirit. The slightly uneven surface, visible brushstrokes, and natural wear of the paint all reflect the philosophy of wabi-sabi, celebrating imperfection, authenticity, and the quiet beauty of handmade things.
