CB236 - Dorei Clay Bell from Ise 伊勢
This dorei clay bell from Ise is a small yet deeply symbolic object, closely connected to the sacred atmosphere of Ise Grand Shrine (伊勢神宮)—one of the most revered Shinto sites in Japan.
The bell is formed in a simple rounded shape and finished in a soft, matte white, giving it a quiet and unassuming presence. Its surface is adorned with a bold red stamp-like design featuring a torii gate, the iconic threshold marking the entrance to sacred space, along with stylized scenery that evokes the pilgrimage path leading into the shrine grounds. On the reverse, a red seal reading 魔除 (mamayoke) and 身代り鈴 (migawari suzu) conveys its purpose as a protective charm—believed to ward off evil and serve as a symbolic substitute that absorbs misfortune on behalf of its owner.
The natural fiber cord tied at the top, slightly frayed and irregular, enhances its rustic charm, while the hollow interior produces a soft, gentle chime when moved. This sound is traditionally thought to purify the space and invite divine protection, echoing the spiritual practices of Shinto where sound plays a role in cleansing and awakening.
There is a quiet beauty in its modest craftsmanship—subtle unevenness in the clay, the hand-applied markings, and the softened edges from handling all reflect the aesthetic of wabi-sabi, where imperfection and transience are embraced as part of an object’s life and meaning.
