CB234 - Dorei Clay Bell from Chūson-ji 中尊寺
This dorei clay bell is a souvenir piece from Chūson-ji (中尊寺), one of Japan’s most historically and spiritually significant Buddhist temple complexes. Rendered in a simple, rounded form and topped with a hand-tied straw tassel, the bell reflects the quiet, contemplative atmosphere associated with temple culture.
The surface is delicately decorated with a soft, monochrome illustration of a temple building nestled among trees, evoking the serene setting of Chūson-ji in Hiraizumi. The understated design, paired with the gentle texture of the clay and natural straw, conveys a strong sense of wabi-sabi—embracing simplicity, imperfection, and the passage of time.
Chūson-ji, founded in the early 12th century and part of a UNESCO World Heritage site, is especially renowned for its Konjikidō (Golden Hall), a symbol of Pure Land Buddhist ideals. As such, this bell carries deeper meaning beyond its decorative charm. Like all dorei, it contains a small internal clapper that produces a soft, calming sound, traditionally believed to purify the surroundings and ward off misfortune.
