CB232 - Dorei Clay Bell of Hina ningyō 雛人形
This dorei clay bell is crafted in the form of a pair of 雛人形 (hina ningyō)—the traditional Emperor and Empress dolls displayed during Hinamatsuri (Girls’ Day) in Japan. Rendered in a compact, rounded form, the two figures sit closely together, symbolizing harmony, protection, and marital happiness.
The figures are softly modeled with serene, almost expressionless faces, a hallmark of traditional hina dolls that conveys elegance and quiet refinement. The male figure wears a simple black court cap, while the female figure is draped in a hood-like covering, both adorned with delicate floral motifs. The body features a gentle gradient of red and purple tones, adding warmth and a festive touch associated with early spring celebrations.
A small cord is attached at the top, allowing the bell to be hung as a seasonal ornament or charm. Like all dorei, the hollow interior contains a pellet that produces a soft, pleasing sound when moved. This sound is traditionally believed to purify the surroundings and ward off misfortune, making the piece both decorative and symbolic.
As a representation of hina dolls, this bell carries deeper cultural meaning. During Hinamatsuri, hina dolls are displayed to protect young girls from harm and bring them happiness, health, and a good future. This miniature dorei captures that same wish in a more intimate form, making it a gentle talisman of love, well-being, and auspicious beginnings.
