CB209 - Lily of the valley Dorei Bell from Hakuba 白馬

CB209 - Lily of the valley Dorei Bell from Hakuba 白馬

This rustic suzuran, lily of the valley 鈴蘭 dorei clay bell from Hakuba 白馬 reflects the simple charm and alpine character of Japan’s mountain villages.

Hand-shaped in a tall, gently tapered cylindrical form, the bell retains its natural earthen texture, with visible clay grain and subtle firing marks that give it a warm, organic presence. A twisted cord of natural fibers is threaded through the top, enhancing its folk-art authenticity. The surface is decorated with a hand-painted motif of green leaves and small white blossoms representing suzuran, accompanied by the inscription 白馬, identifying its origin in the Hakuba region of Nagano Prefecture.

Hakuba, nestled in the Japanese Alps, is renowned for its pristine mountain scenery and alpine flora. The lily of the valley grows in cool, mountainous climates and blooms delicately in late spring. In Japanese symbolism, suzuran represents purity, humility, and the return of happiness—an especially fitting emblem for a mountain town known for fresh air, snow-fed waters, and seasonal beauty.

As a dorei (土鈴), the bell contains a small clay pellet inside that produces a soft, earthy tone when shaken. Traditionally believed to ward off misfortune and invite good luck, such bells are often purchased as regional souvenirs or protective charms. This Hakuba suzuran bell beautifully captures the quiet elegance of alpine nature and the enduring warmth of Japanese folk craftsmanship.
