CB208 - Raichō Dorei Clay Bell from Shinanoji 信濃路
This raichō (雷鳥) dorei clay bell from Shinanoji 信濃路 captures the beloved alpine bird of the Japanese Alps in a beautifully detailed folk craft form.
Hand-shaped in the natural posture of a resting ptarmigan, the figure is painted with careful attention to its distinctive plumage. Warm tones of chestnut brown, ochre, and cream are layered in expressive brushstrokes to recreate the bird’s mottled feathers, while a soft white underside and subtle grey beak bring balance to the composition. A small red marking above the eye adds a vivid accent, echoing the raichō’s characteristic facial detail. A braided red cord is attached across the back, allowing the piece to be hung or displayed as a protective charm.
The raichō, or rock ptarmigan, is a symbol of the high mountains of central Japan and is designated as a Special Natural Monument. Closely associated with the rugged peaks of the Northern Alps, including regions of Nagano (historically known as Shinano), it represents resilience, purity, and harmony with nature. Because it thrives in harsh alpine climates, the bird has come to symbolize endurance and quiet strength.
From Shinanoji—the old name for the historic roadways and mountainous landscape of Nagano—this raichō bell serves as both a regional emblem and a poetic reminder of Japan’s sacred mountain heritage.
