CB206 - Dorei Clay Bell of Kutani-yaki 九谷焼
This Kutani-yaki (九谷焼) dorei clay bell features a refined plum blossom (梅, ume) motif. Kutani-yaki (九谷焼) is a historic style of porcelain that originated in the 17th century in what is now Ishikawa Prefecture. Known for its dynamic use of color and decorative boldness, Kutani ware traditionally features a five-color palette (red, green, yellow, purple, and blue), often combined with expressive brushwork and intricate patterns. Over the centuries, various schools and revivals have refined its techniques, but the hallmark remains its vivid enamel painting over a clear, glossy glaze.
The bell is formed in a rounded, traditional temple-bell shape with a small loop at the top, threaded with a vivid red cord for hanging. Its glossy white glaze provides a luminous ground for the richly colored overglaze enamels characteristic of Kutani ware. Across the surface, delicate plum blossoms unfold along winding branches in tones of vermilion and soft white, accented with deep cobalt blue, fresh green foliage, and touches of gold. The composition is lively yet harmonious, reflecting the bold yet elegant aesthetic long associated with Kutani decoration.
The plum blossom is a powerful symbol in Japanese culture. Blooming in the cold of late winter, it represents perseverance, renewal, and hope. As one of the first flowers of the year, it also signifies auspicious beginnings and the promise of spring. Paired with the gentle chime of a dorei bell—traditionally believed to purify spaces and invite good fortune—the motif reinforces themes of protection and positive transformation.
