CB185 - Dorei Clay Bell from Eiheiji Temple 永平寺
This handmade Dorei clay bell from Eiheiji Temple (永平寺) embodies the spirit of wabi-sabi—the Japanese aesthetic that finds beauty in simplicity, imperfection, and the passage of time. Shaped in the oldest traditional bell form, it has a raw, unglazed finish in a deep charcoal hue with subtle gradient tones that shift under light. The clay surface carries faint, weathered inscriptions, including the name of the temple and a Zen poem, softly embedded into the form like whispers of impermanence.
Eiheiji, located in Fukui Prefecture, is the head temple of the Sōtō school of Zen Buddhism, founded in 1244 by the revered monk Dōgen. This bell serves not only as a sound-producing object but also as a spiritual symbol—its gentle chime intended to bring the listener back to the present moment, a call to mindfulness and peace.
Minimal yet rich with quiet presence, this piece is a thoughtful addition to any collection of Japanese folk art or Zen-inspired decor.
