CB181 - Dorei Clay Bell - Matsuo Bashō 松尾芭蕉

This dorei (clay bell) depicts the renowned Edo-period poet Matsuo Bashō (松尾芭蕉, 1644–1694), one of the most celebrated figures in Japanese literature. Bashō is best known for elevating haiku to a refined poetic form and for his deeply contemplative travel writings, especially 『奥の細道』(Oku no Hosomichi) — The Narrow Road to the Deep North.

In this piece, Bashō is shown holding a straw hat inscribed with a haiku referencing Matsushima, a coastal landscape that left him speechless during his poetic pilgrimage. His tranquil expression and soft features embody the spirit of a thoughtful traveler in pursuit of beauty and impermanence — central themes in his work.

The bell is finished with a gentle matte glaze and traditional colors. It comes in its original red paper box decorated with white cherry blossoms, enhancing its charm and collectibility.

Matsuo Bashō Born in Iga Province, Bashō became a master of haikai no renga (linked verse), and later developed what is now known as haiku. He traveled widely across Japan, turning his journeys into poetic and philosophical reflections. His work continues to influence poets and thinkers worldwide.
