CB147 - Dorei Cow Clay Bell of Nogomi Ningyō のごみ人形

CB147 - Dorei Cow Clay Bell of Nogomi Ningyō のごみ人形

This vibrant dorei (土鈴) clay bell represents a cow from the Nogomi Ningyō (のごみ人形) tradition, a charming regional folk craft from Saga Prefecture, particularly associated with the Nogomi Shrine area. Fashioned in a stylized, rounded form, the figure exudes a playful and rustic character that reflects the joyful essence of Japanese folk art.

The cow is painted in bold, contrasting tones of black and white with vivid accents of cobalt blue, sunny yellow, and bright red—particularly on the snout and around the eyes. These abstract color placements give the piece a strong visual identity while echoing the hand-painted spontaneity of rural craftsmanship. A braided straw cord is looped through the top, typical of traditional Japanese hanging charms.

In Japanese culture, cows (ushi, 牛) are symbols of patience, perseverance, and agricultural blessing. As part of the Eto zodiac, the cow also represents the second year in the 12-year cycle, often associated with stability and hardworking energy.

When shaken, the bell inside emits a soft chime meant to attract good fortune and ward off negativity. As a Nogomi doll, this piece not only functions as a lucky charm but also stands as a delightful example of Japan’s enduring mingei (folk craft) heritage.
