CB106 - Dorei clay bell crafted by Yakushigama 薬師窯
This vintage dorei (clay bell) in the form of a golden horse is a creation of the renowned Yakushigama (薬師窯) kiln, a name deeply rooted in Japan’s rich ceramic heritage. Known for its finely crafted zodiac and auspicious figurines, Yakushigama brings together centuries-old ceramic techniques and traditional symbolism to create objects of both beauty and spiritual resonance.
The figure is rendered in a rounded, stylized horse form with a lustrous gold finish, symbolizing power, vitality, and good fortune, especially significant in the context of the Year of the Horse in the Japanese zodiac. On its side is the character 壽 (kotobuki), meaning “longevity” or “congratulations,” further enhancing its role as a celebratory talisman.
Complete with a deep indigo braided cord, this bell also functions as a gentle noisemaker. In Japanese culture, clay bells like this are often gifted as engimono (縁起物)—lucky charms believed to attract happiness, ward off misfortune, and invite prosperity.
