CB098 - Dorei Clay bell from Izu 伊豆

CB098 - Dorei Clay bell from Izu 伊豆

This is dorei (土鈴) clay bell shaped like a sacred round votive charm, adorned with traditional straw detailing and an inscribed ceramic body. One side bears the characters 「伊豆の旅」(Izu no Tabi), meaning "Journey to Izu", evoking the spirit of travel and pilgrimage through the beautiful Izu Peninsula, an area celebrated for its hot springs, coastal scenery, and literary heritage.

The reverse side features the red inscription 「魔除」(Majō), meaning "warding off evil", paired with 「身代り鈴」(Migawari Suzu), a type of protective amulet bell believed to take on misfortune in place of its bearer. These inscriptions, together with the thickly braided natural fiber cord and straw fringe, suggest this bell was created not only as a souvenir but also as a goofū (護符) a talisman for safe travel and spiritual protection.

Above the straw wrap is a gold band labeled 「交通安全」(Kōtsū Anzen), meaning “traffic safety”, reinforcing its role as a charm for those embarking on a journey, especially by road.

There are cracks on the sides, kindly review the photos for details on the item’s condition.
