CB094 - Kyoto Dorei Clay Bell 京の土鈴
This dorei (clay bell) takes the form of a plump and serene female figure, the top of her head features a floral headdress in relief, decorated with delicate pink blossoms, reference to Kyoto’s famed cherry blossoms.
The motif painted across her body depicts a traditional Kyoto landscape, capturing iconic elements such as flowing water, a cartwheel (kuruma) motif, and perhaps a folded golden fan. These designs symbolize the elegance of the ancient capital, evoking scenes of aristocratic life by the riverbanks or traditional carts from Kyoto’s historical streets. The gentle brushstrokes and use of metallic highlights lend a quiet sophistication to the piece.
On the back, the inscription reads 「京の土鈴」(Kyō no Dorei), meaning "Kyoto Clay Bell", confirming its origin in Kyoto, a city renowned for refined craftsmanship and understated artistic expression. Clay bells like this are often given as charms of good fortune, and their gentle chime is believed to ward off misfortune while inviting harmony.
