CB091 - Dog Dorei Clay Bell – Nishinomiya Shrine 西宮神社
This Dorei clay bell in the shape of a dog comes from Nishinomiya Shrine (西宮神社) in Hyōgo Prefecture, a shrine celebrated as the head shrine of over 3,500 Ebisu shrines across Japan. Carefully handcrafted from clay and painted in soft white with red and black accents, this dog figure bears a stylized seal reading “西宮神社” (Nishinomiya Shrine) on its side — a mark of its origin and spiritual connection.
The dog, or inu (犬) in Japanese, is a symbol of protection, loyalty, and familial well-being. In Shinto tradition, it is often associated with safe childbirth and guardianship. The bell’s gentle jingle is believed to ward off evil and bring good luck, making it a meaningful keepsake or omamori charm.
Often acquired during Hatsumōde (the first shrine visit of the New Year), such bells are also part of the Eto (十二支) or zodiac tradition. The Year of the Dog is associated with honesty, diligence, and a strong sense of duty — values reflected in the guardian spirit of this clay bell.
This piece beautifully combines traditional craftsmanship with deep cultural symbolism, making it a wonderful addition for collectors of Japanese folk art or those seeking a protective charm for the home.
