A vintage pair of monkey-shaped bells, one in pristine white and the other in vibrant red, originates from Ōmiya Hachiman Shrine. Known as 福壽鈴 (Fukuju-rei), they symbolize happiness (福) and longevity (壽), serving as auspicious talismans for blessings and good fortune.
The shrine was founded in 1063 by Minamoto no Yoriyoshi after he witnessed eight white clouds swirling above this area, a sign he interpreted as divine protection from Hachiman, the god of war. Known as one of the three grand shrines of Musashi Province, Ōmiya Hachiman Shrine once spanned about 60,000 tsubo in the Edo period. Dorei is a traditional handcrafted bell made from clay or ceramic, these bells produce a soft, pleasant sound when shaken. Often sold at shrines or festivals as charms to ward off evil and bring good fortune.
The sound of the bell is believed to purify the surrounding environment and attract positive energy. The monkey, associated with cleverness and protection in Japanese culture, is a fitting guardian figure. Each bell carries an elegant gold kanji character—福 (fuku, happiness) or 壽 (ju, longevity)—to amplify its blessings. Traditionally, these bells are cherished as New Year’s or celebratory charms, inviting luck, health, and prosperity into the home.
Size: 6 x 5 x 8cm (White) 5 x 3.5 x 7cm (Red) 11 x 9 x 5cm (Box)
