CB030 - Dorei clay bell Minobu-san
A hand-crafted and painted clay bell Dorei. Figure of a young temple monk, dressed in a white robe and black hakama. The figure holds a yellow broom, symbolizing the traditional temple practice of sweeping, an act of humility, mindfulness, and spiritual purification. A blue headband and pink cheeks give the character a warm, innocent appearance.
The bottom of the bell is inscribed with the following in Japanese:
59.10.21 – Corresponding to October 21, 1984 (Showa 59)
山梨供養 – “Yamanashi Memorial Offering,”
身延山にて – “At Minobu-san” (Mount Minobu), a significant sacred site associated with Nichiren Buddhism and Kuon-ji Temple.
Kuon-ji Temple, located on Mount Minobu (Minobu-san) in Yamanashi Prefecture, is the head temple of the Nichiren sect. It was founded in 1281 by Nichiren himself and served as his residence during his later years. Today, it is a major pilgrimage site, attracting followers and visitors seeking spiritual reflection, especially along its iconic 287-step stone staircase.
Dorei is a traditional handcrafted bell made from clay or ceramic, these bells produce a soft, pleasant sound when shaken. Often sold at shrines or festivals as charms to ward off evil and bring good fortune. The sound of the bell is believed to purify the surrounding environment and attract positive energy.
