This is a Shinme (神馬) clay bell (dorei, 土鈴) from Hakusan Hime Shrine (白山比咩神社), a revered Shinto shrine in Japan dedicated to Kukurihime no Kami, the guardian deity of Mount Hakusan. The bell is shaped like a sacred horse (Shinme, 神馬), a divine steed believed to serve the gods in Shinto tradition. Horses are seen as messengers of the deities, and many shrines have ema (votive plaques) or even real horses dedicated to them. A braided cord is attached to the back, symbolizing protection and spiritual connection. These cords are often used in ritual objects to tie the piece to the divine. The embedded bell inside produces a gentle chime when shaken, believed to ward off evil spirits and invite blessings from the kami (gods). The inscription on the side likely references Hakusan Hime Shrine (白山比咩神社), one of the most important shrines associated with mountain worship (sangaku shinkō, 山岳信仰) in Japan. Pilgrims often purchase such bells as souvenirs (omiyage) from their visit, keeping them at home or carrying them for spiritual protection. The sound of the bell is believed to purify the surrounding environment and attract positive energy. This piece is a wonderful example of Japanese folk belief, shrine culture, and traditional clay bell craftsmanship. Size: 6 x 4 x 6.5 cm
