This vintage Japanese clay bell (Dorei) is a handcrafted piece featuring a natural, rustic finish and adorned with a braided straw handle.
The bell’s surface displays a red stamp seal with the location name 奧山半增坊 (Hōkō-ji) from Shizuoka. It’s written 魔除 (mayoke) from the backside which means “protection against evil” or “warding off evil spirits.”
Dorei is a traditional handcrafted bell made from clay or ceramic, these bells produce a soft, pleasant sound when shaken. Often sold at shrines or festivals as charms to ward off evil and bring good fortune.
