Vintage Shikishi card from Honganji 本願寺 with the original packaging. Honganji refers to the head temples of the Jōdo Shinshū tradition, one of the most prominent schools of Buddhism in Japan. The name “Honganji” means “Temple of the Original Vow”.
The Shikishi features calligraphy in black ink on two contrasting square color backgrounds. 一同念佛 (いちどう ねんぶつ / Ichidō Nembutsu) Meaning: “All Together in Nembutsu” or “United in Reciting the Buddha’s Name” This phrase reflects a key concept in Jōdo Shinshū (True Pure Land Buddhism), emphasizing communal practice and shared devotion to Amida Buddha through the chanting of Namu Amida Butsu.
