A refined original Japanese shikishi calligraphy artwork featuring the bold two-character inscription 「樂琴」, brushed in expressive black ink and dated 昭和己酉 (Shōwa tsuchinoto-tori), corresponding to 1969.

樂琴 evokes the idea of “the joy of the koto,” “delight in music,” or “finding pleasure through music.” In the wider East Asian literati tradition, the qin was more than an instrument: it was associated with cultivation, contemplation, refinement, and harmony of the spirit. The phrase therefore suggests not only enjoyment of music, but also the inner peace and cultivated pleasure found through artistic practice.

The two large characters are written with strong, confident brushstrokes, alternating between dense areas of ink and sharply tapering lines. Their compact but energetic form gives the work a lively rhythm that feels especially appropriate for a phrase connected with music.

With its combination of music, calligraphy, and a clearly dated Shōwa-period inscription, this piece has both decorative and cultural appeal. A beautiful work for collectors of Japanese calligraphy, koto and traditional music imagery, Shōwa-period art, original shikishi, or classical literati-inspired expressions.
