SHP399 - Original Shikishi Calligraphy Chikusei Shōei
A striking original Japanese shikishi calligraphy artwork featuring the classical four-character expression:
“The sound of bamboo, the shadows of pine.”
The phrase evokes a quiet natural scene in which bamboo rustles in the wind while pine branches cast shifting shadows. It is a compact image of stillness and movement existing together — sound and silence, light and shadow, all changing from moment to moment.
The phrase suggests a deeply contemplative atmosphere often associated with Zen aesthetics and classical East Asian poetry.
Rather than describing a specific place, it captures a state of awareness: noticing subtle things in nature — the faint sound of leaves, the movement of shadows, the passing of time. It can therefore be understood as a meditation on tranquility, impermanence, and mindful observation.
The work is executed in bold, flowing black ink, with broad sweeping strokes and dramatic changes in pressure. The large characters fill much of the shikishi surface, giving the piece a powerful visual presence while still retaining the spontaneity of hand-brushed calligraphy
