A striking vintage Japanese shikishi (色紙) calligraphy artwork by Masuhara Keikichi (増原恵吉, 1903–1985), a prominent Shōwa-period bureaucrat and politician who served in senior government positions including Director-General of the Administrative Management Agency and Director-General of the Defense Agency.
The work features the classical phrase:
“Along the lonely path, the wind roars through the pines.”
The expression creates a wonderfully atmospheric scene: a quiet path, pine trees, and the strong sound of wind passing through their branches. Symbolically, the phrase can suggest solitude, strength, endurance, dignity, and steadfastness. Pine trees remain evergreen through winter, so in East Asian culture they often symbolize resilience and constancy. The narrow path can additionally suggest one's individual path through life.
Wven as the wind roars through the pines, one continues steadily along one’s path. The pine, an evergreen symbol of endurance and integrity, reinforces the idea of remaining strong and true through hardship.
Masuhara Keikichi (1903–1985) was born in Ehime Prefecture and graduated from Tokyo Imperial University before entering the Home Ministry. After the Second World War, he served as Governor of Kagawa Prefecture, later becoming a member of the House of Councillors. During his political career he held a number of senior cabinet-level positions, including Director-General of the Administrative Management Agency, Director-General of the Hokkaido Development Agency, and twice Director-General of the Defense Agency.
