KR03 - Antique Seto Ware Maneki Neko 瀬戸焼

KR03 - Antique Seto Ware Maneki Neko 瀬戸焼

A beautiful and rare antique Seto Ware (瀬戸焼) Maneki Neko, date from the Meiji to early Taishō period, making it over 100 years old.

Seto, in Aichi Prefecture, is one of Japan’s most historically significant ceramic-producing regions and played an important role in the early development of porcelain Maneki Neko. According to historical references, the production of ceramic lucky cats began in Seto during the mid-Meiji period, making these early examples particularly fascinating pieces of Japanese folk art history.

This charming cat features a traditional white porcelain body decorated with distinctive black and brown calico markings, expressive hand-painted eyes, and a beautifully detailed collar in vibrant red, cobalt blue, and yellow with delicate gilt accents. Its raised paw represents the traditional Japanese gesture of beckoning good fortune and prosperity.

Unlike modern mass-produced Maneki Neko, this early example has a wonderfully individual expression and an unmistakable antique character, reflecting the craftsmanship and artistic sensibilities of its time.

Condition: Antique condition with visible signs of age and wear, including a crack running along the body, surface marks, and areas of paint and gilding loss. These imperfections are consistent with its considerable age and form part of its historical character. Please examine the photographs carefully.
