A refined Naruko Kokeshi by Toshio Sato 佐藤俊雄, featuring the elegant proportions, restrained palette, and finely controlled brushwork associated with the Naruko tradition of Miyagi Prefecture.

Born in Iwate Prefecture in 1935, Sato became familiar with woodturning from an early age through the work of the Oikawa Masao Factory in Naruko. In 1952, he studied painting and coloring under Onuma Shinbei, whose careful instruction strongly influenced the precision and balance of Sato’s later work. By 1957, Sato had begun producing kokeshi himself, and in 1964 he established his own workshop in Naruko Onsen. In addition to making his own dolls, he also supplied turned wooden blanks to other respected makers, including Takahashi Josuke and Onuma Kimiko.

This example has a tall, beautifully proportioned cylindrical body decorated with a large chrysanthemum motif, rendered in soft grey-brown tones and deep black. Fine horizontal rings at the neck and base frame the composition, while the large rounded head carries the characteristic calm expression of Naruko kokeshi, with delicately painted eyes, a tiny red mouth, and bold black hair.

The doll is preserved with its original box and printed leaflet, making it especially appealing as a complete vintage example. With its understated floral decoration, harmonious form, and documented workshop origin, it is a beautiful piece for collectors of traditional kokeshi, Naruko folk craft, and Japanese mingei.
