A vintage Tsuchiyu-kei kokeshi by Takahashi Chūzō 高橋忠蔵 (1893–1981), an important early 20th-century craftsman whose career bridges the world of traditional woodturning and the development of modern kokeshi production in Fukushima Prefecture.
This doll has a strong, understated presence, with a large rounded head, long cylindrical body, and restrained red-and-black decoration. The face is particularly distinctive: narrow almond-shaped eyes, fine arched brows, a long simple nose, and a very small mouth create a calm, slightly enigmatic expression.
Takahashi Chūzō was a respected Tsuchiyu-system kokeshi craftsman, specifically associated with the Sabako sub-lineage. Born in Fukushima Prefecture in 1893, he began training as a woodturner in 1910 under Watanabe Kakuji, while learning much of the practical turning technique from senior apprentice Ōishi Yotarō.
After establishing his own workshop in Haranomachi in 1919, he produced a wide range of turned wooden goods before beginning to paint kokeshi himself around 1923. His pre-war dolls are particularly noted for their narrow horizontal eyes and old-fashioned, understated expressions. Later in life, after moving to Hino, Tokyo, he continued making kokeshi for collectors and also recreated older Sabako forms on request.
