A vintage Togatta-kei kokeshi made by Kyuichi Omori 大森久一, a craftsman associated with the traditional kokeshi culture of Miyagi Prefecture.
Omori was born in Shiroishi City in 1932. After working in mountain labor and farming, he entered the woodworking trade in 1953 under Ono Kozaburo Shoten, where he developed his skills in woodturning. He became independent in 1959 and later turned his attention toward traditional kokeshi during the folk craft revival of the 1960s. Around 1964, under the guidance of Tetsuro Sato, he studied the painting, proportions, and aesthetics of traditional kokeshi, eventually establishing his own workshop in Togatta Onsen.
This example shows the classic character of Togatta kokeshi, with a large rounded head, slender cylindrical body, and delicately painted facial features. The head is decorated with red and black hair patterns, while the body carries faded red floral-style decoration and ring bands, softened beautifully through age.
The reverse bears a commemorative inscription for a retirement from Makiki Elementary School (槻木小学校), dated March 1987 (Shōwa 62), giving the piece an especially personal and historical character beyond its value as a folk craft object.
The visible fading, surface wear, and patina are consistent with age and contribute to the doll’s authentic wabi-sabi appeal.
