A vintage Shingata Omiyage Kokeshi featuring traditional floral decorations and a handwritten poem inspired by dreams (夢) and the beauty of the heart.
This elegant wooden doll features a large, rounded head with delicately painted eyes, arched eyebrows, and a peaceful expression. Its distinctive hairstyle is decorated with black and red brushstrokes, reflecting the refined aesthetics of traditional Japanese kokeshi.
The slender cylindrical body is beautifully adorned with deep red chrysanthemum flowers, green foliage, and fine horizontal lines. At the centre, flowing Japanese calligraphy includes poetic evoking themes of hope, inner reflection, and the emotional beauty of nature.
Shingata Kokeshi, meaning New-Style Kokeshi, developed as a more decorative interpretation of traditional Japanese wooden dolls, particularly during the Shōwa period.
Unlike traditional Dento Kokeshi, which follow established regional styles, Shingata Kokeshi often incorporate creative shapes, expressive floral patterns, and poetic inscriptions.
These dolls were popular souvenirs from Japanese hot spring resorts and tourist destinations, combining traditional woodturning craftsmanship with artistic individuality.
